Just came off of an exhausting weekend with a concert/recital each day: a Reed College Orchestra concert on Friday, senior recital on Saturday, and an amazing performance of Bach’s St. John Passion on Sunday by the Portland Baroque Orchestra.
I think the winner of the weekend has to be the Reed Orchestra, or at least Ralph Vaughan Williams, because somehow I had never heard The Lark Ascending before. It’s so unabashedly pretty and pentatonic-y that there was no way I wasn’t going to love it. The violin soloist, Charlie Hankin, was wonderful, and the acoustics in Kaul Auditorium were perfect for the piece.
